FTC Pledges Not to Drop Any Numbers From Do Not Call Registry Because of Registration Expiration

When the National Do Not Call Registry was implemented in 2003, registrations of phone numbers were for five years. This limit was to ensure that the data remained accurate and up-to-date. With the five-year expiration period looming for the first registrants, consumers have been concerned about the need and process for re-registration.

Because the FTC uses a scrubbing program to remove disconnected and reassigned numbers each month and with more than 145 million phone numbers in the registry, the FTC has decided to re-examine its original position on re-registration. Until a decision is made on whether to make registration permanent, the FTC has announced that it will not remove any telephone numbers from the National Do Not Call Registry based on the five-year registration expiration period.
